A Comprehensive Study of Passive Wake-up Radio in Wireless Sensor Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wake-up radio, as a secondary radio transceiver, is implemented to monitor the channel condition so that the main radio can be turned off when there is no communication activity. This thesis work focuses on the analysis of passive wake-up radio (PWUR), where the wake-up radio is entirely powered by the wake-up signal and does not need any additional battery supply. The work covers PWUR’s both hardware implementation and performance analysis. In particular, we analyze some typical issues when PUWR is adopted into the ZigBee networks. Our results show that implementing PWUR in ZigBee networks improves latency and energy consumption compared to traditional duty cycling approaches except at the highest packet rates. Also, the addition of PWUR improves the ZigBee network throughput by introducing the wake-up delay to the CSMA/CA process.

Duty-Cycle-Aware Minimum Energy Multicasting of Passive RFID Wake-up Radios for Wireless Sensor Networks
In duty-cycled wireless sensor networks, the nodes switch between active and dormant states, and each node determine its active/dormant schedule independently. This complicates the Minimum Energy Multicasting (MEM) problem in wireless sensor networks both for one-to-many multicasting and for all-to-all multicasting. In the case of one-to-many multicasting, we present a formalization of the Mini...
متن کاملPassive wake-up radios: From devices to applications
Energy efficiency is one of the most important criteria in the design of a wireless sensor network. Sensor nodes are usually batterypowered and thus have very limited lifetime. In this paper, we introduce a novel passive wake-up radio device named WISP-Mote that uses a passive RFID tag as a wake-up receiver for a traditional sensor node. We characterize the WISP-Mote with field tests in differe...
متن کاملA Novel Comprehensive Taxonomy of Intelligent-Based Routing Protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks
Routing in ad-hoc networks, specifically intelligent-based ones, is a highly interested research topic in recent years. Most of them are simulation-based study. Large percentages have not even mentioned some of the fundamental parameters. This strictly reduces their validity and reliability. On the other hand, there is not a comprehensive framework to classify routing algorithms in wireless sen...
متن کاملA JOINT DUTY CYCLE SCHEDULING AND ENERGY AWARE ROUTING APPROACH BASED ON EVOLUTIONARY GAME FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS
Network throughput and energy conservation are two conflicting important performance metrics for wireless sensor networks. Since these two objectives are in conflict with each other, it is difficult to achieve them simultaneously. In this paper, a joint duty cycle scheduling and energy aware routing approach is proposed based on evolutionary game theory which is called DREG. Making a trade-off ...
متن کاملA REACH-Mote: A Range Extending Passive Wake-up Wireless Sensor Node
A wireless sensor network that employs passive radio wake-up of the sensor nodes can reduce the energy cost for unnecessary idle listening and communication overhead, extending the network lifetime. A passive wake-up radio is powered by the electromagnetic waves transmitted by a wake-up transmitter rather than a battery on the sensor node. However, this method of powering the wake-up radio resu...
